Climate change

storm horizon

We believe that climate change is the biggest sustainability challenge of our time.

There is no reasonable doubt about the reality of climate change. Nor is there doubt now about the scale of action that we need to take.

There is scientific and political consensus that temperatures must be limited to an increase of 2ºC from pre-industrial levels to avoid dangerous climate change.

This requires a reduction in UK carbon dioxide emissions of at least 60% by 2050.

What we expect from our partners on climate change

We realise that the contribution of different businesses and organisations to climate change varies significantly. We also recognise that different companies face greatly differing risks and opportunities as a result of climate change.

However, we believe that all companies and organisations, regardless of sector, must take serious action now on this issue for two simple reasons.

1) This is a collective problem. The economic costs of inaction will, over time, dwarf those of action now. Delayed action means that all business and all organisations will suffer alongside the rest of society.

2) Enlightened businesses that tackle climate change now will reap a significant advantage. Companies that offer products and services with a lower climate impact will increasingly do better than their competitors.

So, we expect our partners to demonstrate leadership on this issue.

We set out what this means in practice in our climate challenge.

How we help our partners demonstrate leadership on climate change

  • We provide expert advice on climate change strategy and positioning. We challenge existing organisational approaches to make sure they are effective.
  • We work with partners to identify the specific risks and opportunities they face in a carbon-constrained world, and develop future-proofing tools for them.
  • We also work with partners to embed sustainable innovation within their organisations. This is essential to develop products, services and business strategies that will thrive in the low carbon economy.
