The UK’s roads are more congested than ever. Our reliance on cars shows no sign of abatement and vehicle ownership is increasing at an alarming rate. Unsurprisingly therefore, the environmental impact of road transport is growing rapidly – a trend which shows no signs of reversing.
Against a backdrop of tough EU carbon emission targets, the Government is under pressure to come up with imaginative and innovative solutions to this conundrum. Indeed, the recent King Review for the Chancellor of the Exchequer explores the potential for new technologies and fuels that could help drive down emissions.
However, there is another way to cut carbon at no financial or operational cost that should not be underestimated. It brings with it a potential prize of reducing 8.4 million tonnes of carbon emissions a year, equivalent to taking three million cars of our roads.
Simply by adopting a different way of driving, motorists can directly contribute to reducing environmental impact.
