New jobs

Ali has a new job as a technician in a carbon capture and storage plant on the east coast. The plant separates out carbon dioxide from the other waste materials that are produced when natural gas is burned to generate electricity.

It is then pumped into depleted oil and gas fields deep below the North Sea bed which act as secure reservoirs, rather than being released into the atmosphere and contributing to climate change.

With the price of carbon rising each year, carbon capture and storage looks like a good long term bet for a profitable, low carbon industry. Partly because of having so many viable sites nearby, the UK has become a world-leader in the technology.

Part of Ali's role is training up new staff locally - the plant is now one of the biggest employers in the county - as well as taking trainee technicians from around the world on virtual tours of the plant, using portable virtual window technology.
