Low carbon lifestyles in 2022 could mean a more efficient and better organised transport system.
We could see vastly improved public transport, integrated across different modes (for example, so the bus arrives before the train leaves) and well-coordinated so that travelling becomes hassle-free.
Moving goods around will become more efficient, with more sharing of haulage, and greater use of new and old transport options such as rail, canal boats, inshore shipping and airships. This will bring traffic off the roads.
Alternatives to travelling by car will become more attractive, and our reliance on cars will decline, but we will of course still be free to use cars when we want to. There will be options available to make this easier - as with the Autoconvoy concept - and more efficient, as with electric cars and carshare schemes.
It'll be easier and more attractive to cycle or walk short journeys, and in many cases we simply won't need to travel if we don't want to. There will be more options for working at home or in our local communities, or shopping over the internet, perhaps using the Shop&Drop for convenience.
We'll still be able to fly on holiday or business, but there will be more and more enticing alternatives, from better holidays in the UK and videoconferencing for business meetings, to international travel by high speed train, ocean liner or airship.
