There was no bling in the Oscar goody bags this year. Instead, each presenter and performer received a special green gift - a ‘free pass’ to balance 45 tonnes of CO2 through offsetting outfit TerraPass. That’s about double the average American’s hefty footprint, though probably still too little to mop up all those Learjet flights. But it’s not a permit to pollute. It comes with a glossy booklet urging each star to cut their carbon at source - and the offer of a personalised reduction strategy drawn up by TerraPass.
