Innovation nation
Renewables seen as the biggest breakthrough, opinion survey reveals Brits are excited about the advance of renewable energy. As many as 38% in a recent survey picked this as one of the innovations likely to have most positive impact on society over the next 10 years. That’s even more than are pinning their hopes on new drugs to treat AIDS - the development identified as having the most beneficial social potential by 37% of respondents in the same opinion poll. The QinetiQ survey also asked what would deliver the greatest benefits to individuals. Here there was a strong perception of the advantages of smaller, more fuel-efficient cars (ticked by 52% of respondents, while 34% ticked ‘hybrid vehicles’). Fewer are enthused by wireless technology and suchlike wizardry. When they were asked what had already made most difference to their lives, among the top mentions were internet shopping and banking, and mobile phones - but nearly half referred to their negative impact. Looking further ahead, people say the most pressing issues to address through innovation over the next 20 years include pollution (42% say so - ahead of terrorism, mentioned by 37%), climate change, road congestion, recycling and waste. Let’s hope the technology can deliver all those promises…
