Flushed with hope
A redesigned urinal for waterless convenience Waterless urinals are all well and good for saving water, but the downside of dealing with disposable cartridges has hindered them from really catching on. Will this all change with the advent of the Airflush? Designed by Elemental Solutions - sorry, this whole area is fraught with puns - the Airflush is being promoted through the Green Building Store, and has already been installed in some National Trust and Forestry Commission properties. Needing neither cartidges nor ‘enzyme sticks’ to stop blocked drains or bad smells, and having no disposable parts, the Airflush is extremely low maintenance, claim the developers. All it takes is a wipe down at the end of the day like any conventional model. “Some have been in place for three or four years and haven’t yet needed the trap cleaning,” says Mark Moodie from Elemental Solutions. The waste water from hand basins can connect to the same pipe, providing a frequent wash-through.
